WORK on the cemetery at Warsop has finally been completed, 15 months after it was left wrecked by a runaway JCB.

Driven by a thief being chased by police, he racked up £21,500 worth of damage after smashing through walls, railings and several gravestones before being detained.

He was jailed for four-and-a-half years last October.

The cost was covered by insurance, but Coun Mick Burton portfolio Holder for public protection at Mansfield District Council: “Everything possible was done to complete the repairs as quickly as possible but unfortunately there were delays settling the insurance claim.

“The stone used in the repairs had to match with the existing wall, which meant we were limited in the materials we could use and sourcing the correct stone took longer than expected.

Staff worked hard to ensure that the repair work is of the highest standard.”
