Voting takes place for youth council

Competition is hotting up for places on the Derbyshire Youth Council as young people go to the polls.

The Big Vote election is held every two years and gives local 11 to 18 year olds the chance to canvass for an opportunity to represent young people.

This year, 122 young people are competing for a place on Derbyshire Youth Council, representing secondary schools, special schools, support centres, colleges and children in care.

A week of voting concludes on Friday 14 March.

Coun Damien Greenhalgh, Derbyshire County Councillor’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said:

“It’s great to see young people putting themselves forward and wanting to make a difference.

“I’d urge all students to get involved and vote for the person they’d like to represent their school.

“It’s important because these councillors will be the voice of Derbyshire’s young people for the next two years and have a say on how we make decisions and spend money on the thing that affect them.”
