Volunteers at Daffodil Cafe raise £32,000 for dementia appeal

Volunteers from the Daffodil café a recently presented a cheque to Trust CEO Karen Fisher, as a thoughtful and final gesture prior to closing its doors until 28 September for refurbishment.

The funds had been raised from profits of the Daffodil Café, thanks to the hard work and dedication of all its volunteers, who wholeheartedly support the Dementia Care Appeal.

Lorraine Brooks, Dementia Specialist Nurse, said: “We really hope the community will support this campaign as much as we do.

“We want to offer high quality ‘dementia friendly’ care to patients admitted to our hospitals.”

Café volunteer John Deeming added: “I’m delighted about all of the hard work and effort the café volunteers have put in, especially when it results in a donation as large as £30K going to the trusts ward 52 dementia care appeal.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing the newly refurbished café, and continuing my volunteer duties.”

Chair of King’s Mill Volunteers Ron Tansley said: “The volunteers work tirelessly to support the trust’s fundraising appeals, not only through donating café and ward trolley profits, but also through the hard work of the fundraisers, who can be found in the main entrance of the hospital selling items, holding raffles and promoting book sales.

“The support of members of the community who use our services is very much appreciated.”

Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust aim to improve the quality of care offered to patients with dementia and has already introduced many improvements including memory boxes, a volunteer befriending scheme and dementia friendly signs to five inpatient wards.

As patients with dementia can be cared for on all adult wards, across a variety of specialities, the Trust wants provide every adult ward with dementia friendly signage, dementia friendly clocks visible from every bed space, highly contrasting raised toilet seats and brightly coloured cups/mugs to promote better hydration of people with dementia.

A stylish Vintage Tea Party has been organised by the Liaison Psychiatry Team, in aid of the Dementia Care Appeal.

All are invited to the rocking event which will be taking place on Level 6, Thursday September 3 between 3pm and 6pm.

Expect live 40s music, afternoon tea, cake stalls, a raffle, bric-a-brac stall and a book sale.

There will also be a 40s style hairdressing display taking place at Kings Mill Hospital Hairdressers during the day on Thursday September 3.

They will be offering fantastic discount vouchers. All monies raised will go to the Dementia Care Appeal for Ward 52.
