Villagers have their say on plans for a war memorial in Selston

The memorial, which is being funded by Nottinghamshire County Council, Ashfield District Council and Selston Parish Council, will be placed at the recreation ground.

Selston currently has no war memorial, although it does have some plaques in the churches.

Now community leaders want to erect a memorial to remember those who lost their lives in service.

The consultation took place at the Old Council Offices and Coun Gail Turner said the plans for the memorial was ‘very well received’ by residents.

“People generally liked the design,” she said.

“They also had some other ideas that we are going to incorporate.”

As well as including the names of servicemen who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars, the memorial will also pay tribute to locals who were killed in subsequent conflicts such as Korea.

Those behind the project are now conducting research to find the names of soldiers from the village so that they can be commemorated on the new memorial.
