VIDEO: Thousands come out for Warsop Carnival

Revellers made their way to The Carrs on Sunday for the big day, the flagship event in the town’s calendar, and with the weather finally holding up, it helped boost numbers with an estimated 4,500 turning out.

There was the carnival parade in which a number of floats made their way through the town to the delight of the waiting crowds.

The theme this year was the elements - fire earth air and water - and there were plenty of colourful costumes and truck on display.

The eventual winners wereWith Mansfield mayor, Kate Allsop helping to judge the competition, the eventual winners were Hetts Lane Holiday Club with Netherfield Infants School and Birklands Primary School finishing as runners-up and third respectively.

There was also plenty of entertainment on The Carrs with the fairground, live music and entertainment, plus plenty of food and drink.

Jennifer Cockcroft, chairman of the carnival committee, said: “The weather was fine and that really helped, so the day went really well.

“We’ve been told there was about 4,500 people which we are pleased with, a lot of effort goes into this.”

The carnival has been running, in some format, since the early 20th century but problems attracting volunteers meant this year’s had been put in jeopardy.

But following crunch talks, new committee members stepped forward to ensure it would still go ahead.

So much work goes into organising the day that plans for next year’s event will begin in the coming months.
