VIDEO: RAC concern over M1 speed limit plan

Motoring campaigners have raised concerns over controversial plans to cut the speed limit on the M1 between Mansfield and Sheffield to 60mph.

The Highways Agency said the reduced speed limit would be used to help reduce emissions along the route.

But the RAC said the move was a slippery slope that could pave the way for similar speed restrictions on other sections of motorway.

The proposed reduction is part of the “smart motorway” scheme, which would involve the hard shoulder being used as an extra lane to ease congestion.
