Rose Cullip makes friends with Dodo, who is being re-homed by her dad, John Renshaw of Annesley Woodhouse. Dodo who is an alsation cross, was found abandoned at the Ashfield District Council offices and is around 18 months to two years old.

The owners of Coxmoor House Kennels and Cattery, on Derby Road, built a new kennel block for their four-legged guests in April and decided to use the old block to house strays until they could be reunited with their owners.

But after only eight weeks, the block is packed with lost pooches and the owners are at their wits’ end.

Owner Tim Clark said: “It’s panic stations. We only opened in April and already we have over 20 dogs.

“Many of the dogs have been implanted with chips - but sometimes the owners move home. It’s a real shame.

“We are also looking for people who can offer a new home to the dogs we have now.”

Mr Clark contacted the Chad to tell people who are looking for dogs to contact the kennels first.

He added: “People lose their dogs when they are out walking in the woods.

“We had someone come yesterday who was reunited with their dog. They had put up posters and launched a campaign on Facebook.

“But if more people know about us - maybe we can reunite them with their pets sooner.”

Dog owners will be able to get their pets microchipped free of charge at an event on Thursday 19th June at the Summit Centre, Pavilion Road, Kirkby-in-Ashfield from 11am until 3pm.

The event was arranged by the district council to highlight a change in the law which will require all dogs to be microchipped from April 6, 2016, as well as to assist dog owners in complying.
