Video: Hundreds gather at funeral of late MP and former Clipstone miner Harry Harpham

Hundreds gathered at Sheffield Cathedral on Tuesday for the funeral of the late MP and former Clipstone miner Harry Harpham.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, deputy Labour leader Tom Watson and David Blunkett were among those who turned out to pay their final respects to Mr Harpham - a man described as a ‘true fighter’ for those without a voice. Former Deputy Leader of Sheffield City Council, Harry Harpham lost his battle to cancer on February 4 - just nine short months after being elected to represent Brightside and Hillsborough.

In a colourful service, during which mourners chanted ‘the miners united, will never be defeated’ and sang The Red Flag in his memory, those in attendance were told that Mr Harpham regarded the trade union movement to be his second family.

In moving eulogies delivered by Mr Harpham’s brother, Rick, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Reverend Alan Billings and Labour stalwart David Blunkett mourners heard the former miner described as a loving big brother, a proud dad and as someone who always fought for ‘what was right’.
