Dogs of all shapes and sizes were wagging their tails in Mansfield Market Place on Saturday when they were taken to get treats and toys at the Santa Paws grotto.

And despite the heavy rain, the event, which was organised by the Jerry Green Dog Rescue Centre and Mansfield District Council, still attracted plenty of dogs.

Christopher Patton, dog welfare assistant at the Jerry Green centre in Blidworth, was excited about bringing the event to Mansfield, after previous success holding the event in Sherwood Forest.

Christopher said: “We just want to give people the opportunity to bring their dogs along to see Santa, get some treats and toys and take a few pictures.

“We have a selection of toys and squeaky treats and nice surprises for every little dog that comes along.

“And if we can raise awareness and a bit of cash for the rescue centre whilst we’re here - even better.”

The charity, based at a newly-refurbished centre on Warsop Lane, cares for up to 27 rescue dogs at a time and is run by six members of staff and more than 20 dog-loving volunteers.

Long-term volunteer Gill Skinner, who adopted her Westie Oscar from the centre, thinks the Christmas event is just what dogs need.

She said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to do something special for dogs at Christmas.

“And the money raised goes towards the dogs in our centre. They’re very important to us because they’re all part of our big family.”

The event was also attended by Mansfield Dog Control Service, who were giving help and advice to people about responsible dog ownership.

Following the success of the event, the team at the Jerry Green charity are looking to expand the event in future years.
