Residents of Newgate lodge are delighted with their two new furry friends.

The home on Newgate Lane has brought two rabbits into the home to be petted and stroked by residents.

PNikki Dickens activity coordinator said: “The rabbits give the residents a lot of pleasure - the bunnies bring out their gentle side.

“The residents’ faces light up when they see them.

“It is all about creating homes from homes. Pets are very therapeutic and particularly to elderly people.”

Newgate Lodge resident, Marjorie Hutchinson, cuddled the care home’s newest member, Squeak.

She said;”I love rabbits - these two are lovely.”

Pets at Home, Mansfield has donated a hutch and equipment and food for the pets.

“We brought Bubble and Squeak a few weeks ago and thanks to Pets At Home they now have a place to live.

They also donated vaccinations food bowls and bottles for them.”

Research has shown that introducing pets has a a positive effect on mood in elderly residents in care homes and day centres.

Newgate Lodge is a 55 bed residential care home which specialises in the therapeutic care needs of individuals experiencing the many facets of dementia illness.

The home has a number of activity and communal areas and a secluded private garden.
