Urgent crackdown on speeding after rise in motorcyclist deaths on Derbyshire’s roads

Motorcyclist deaths across the county have doubled from three between January and June last year to six during the same period this year.

Now, Derbyshire road safety partnership – which is made up of organisations including Derbyshire police – will concentrate less on educating riders and more on enforcement.

Chief Inspector Tracy Lewis, head of roads policing in Derbyshire, said: “We prefer to keep riders safe by educating them but the rising death toll during the first half of this year has prompted us to review our approach.

“Speeding by the riders themselves contributes to many of the crashes where they end up getting killed or hurt. That’s why we’re going to take a tougher approach.

“From now until October, we’ll be focusing more on speed detection and prosecution and less on chatting to bikers about their riding behaviour.
