For many of them the first they knew of the danger was when tactical officers from Nottinghamshire Police ‘flew in' to take cover behind parked cars, and direct their aim at a man with a presumed handgun, later confirmed to be a replica.

Nottinghamshire Police armed response units were called to Brierley Cottages shortly after 10pm on Monday, July 11.

Witnesses in the street described the scene as the 56-year-old man reportedly lashed out desperately and egged officers on to shoot him.

But brave officers took control of the situation, and were able to lure him to the back of the house, giving them an opportunity to enter.

Mum-of-four, Kerry Chapman, 38, said: “I was in the garden having a cuppa with my neighbour and I heard voices shouting ‘get in the house, close the doors and windows.’

“It was all going off. The police told us to get in the house.

“He came out into the street with a knife in one hand and a gun in the other, like a Sheriff’s gun.“They kept saying ‘put your weapons down, put your weapons down'.”

"Then police were trying to get him to calm down, they were saying ‘what can we do to help you?’," added Kerry.

"But the guy said: “If you’re not going to help me you can shoot me. Then they told him to go to the back of the house and that’s when they went inside. The scariest thing was when one of the police moved – he heard the footstep and swung the gun around at him.

“It was terrifying. I haven’t told my kids what happened, it would traumatise them.”

Some 20 officers, according to witnesses, descended on the street within a few minutes of being called and after two hours the man was disarmed and in custody.

Nottinghamshire Police confirmed officers were called to a house at Brierley Cottages, having received a call from the occupant suggesting he was in possession of a firearm.

A police spokesman said: “Armed response officers did attend the address, in accordance with national protocols for attendance at such incidents, and following negotiation with a man at the scene an arrest was made for possession of a firearm.”

A replica firearm was recovered from the address and no-one was injured in the incident.

A 56-year-old man was taken into custody.

Residents in Brierley Cottages also said the incident was out of character in the street, which used to see a lot of trouble revolve around the nearby Oval pub, which has since closed.

Terri Soyer, 53, a landscape gardener who lives across from the man’s house said the scene was dramatic.

She added: “I heard a bit of a kerfuffle and then the dog went completely ape. Next thing, I could see the armed coppers flying over the fences and I could see they had the big guns with their tracers on him. It was dramatic. I normally watch CSI on a Monday night but I didn’t need to.”

Another resident said: “We were all out until one in the morning, I don’t think anybody in the road got any sleep last night. We were scared.”
