UPDATE: Man '˜stabbed' after violence spilled into Mansfield street

Police have confirmed a violent assault in Mansfield left a man with potentially life threatening injuries.

Reports came in this afternoon of a violent disorder involving a number of individuals after fighting spilled out onto the street.

Nottinghamshire Police officers are still in attendance conducting investigations after local sources claimed a man suffered multiple stab wounds and was rushed to hospital.

The force has now confirmed they attended at around 1.45pm today (Saturday, October 29) with reports of a number of people involved in a disturbance at Smith Street, Mansfield. Other sources have claimed the disturbance also covered Newgate Lane and Eakring Road and a police cordon was placed around the area.

One local source said a man in his early 20s was stabbed and is receiving critical medical treatment.

He said: “A guy around 20 has been stabbed six times in the neck and twice in the chest. It started on Eakring Road and finished in Newgate Lane.”

Other sources on Facebook have speculated about the incident, claiming a stabbing took place in the vicinity of the chemist’s shop in the lane, and mentioned a heavy police presence in the area.

Police said: “Officers were called to reports of a disturbance in Smith Street, Mansfield on Saturday, October 29.

“At around 1.45pm officers arrived in the area and found a man, who we believe to be the victim of an assault, with potentially life threatening injures. It is thought these injuries have been caused by a knife. He was taken to hospital and remains in a serious but stable condition.

“A number of people may have been involved in the disorder and police investigation into exactly what took place is underway.

“We believe this to be an isolated incident but as you might expect, there will be an increased police presence in the area as officers conduct their work and also keep members of the community informed.

Another local source, David Lees, described the crime scene as ‘a very high police presence’ arrived in the area.

He said: “I thought it was to do with that missing woman but a bystander told me somebody had been stabbed and couldn’t really see anything else. I didn’t see an ambulance though.”

Witness Sarah White said on Facebook: “We were driving past Hall Street when the group of lads were fighting at around 2pm. We had to stop as the fight spilled onto the road. The driver in front rang the police, the young man was bleeding quite badly then. It was awful. I hope the man is ok.”
