Snow and ice causes hazardous driving conditions as the Met Office extends its weather warning today today (March 4).

A yellow weather alert is still in place after snow settled last night in higher areas, closing some roads and creating dangerous conditions with sleet and wet snow.

Rain and sleet is likely in the far north, with snow likely to persist over the Peaks. Forecasters outline a westerly breeze at first, but winds becoming variable then northeasterly later with a maximum temperature of 6 °C.

Then tonight the band of rain, sleet, and snow will edge southwards with further chance of settling snow across the region. Minimum Temperature 0 °C.

Chief forecasters said: "The main risk of accumulating snow is during Thursday night and Friday on high ground of northern England and north Wales above around 200 m, where 2 to 5 cm is expected.

"Above 300 m, 10 cm or more is likely to accumulate, with some drifting possible in the strong winds which develop around the periphery of the low pressure centre."
