Two Hucknall men die in horror crash

Adam Burton and Craig Dowhan both died at the scene when the silver Rover 218 they were travelling in with another man went off the road and collided with a telegraph pole before catching fire.

A third man, also believed to be from Hucknall, sustained non life-threatening injuries and was taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre, but has since been discharged.

The unsung hero, who did not want to be named, bravely tried to put out the flames which had started in the car moments after it crashed on Longdale Lane in Ravenshead at around 10pm on Sunday.

“The crash was a horrible sound - like a train hitting a mountain. I said to my wife, ‘that is a bad one’.

“I ran out the house with my slippers on and saw this poor kid in the passenger seat and thought, ‘he is still alive.’

“I was running back and forth from my house getting water. It was horrific.”

A tree at the crash scene has now become a roadside memorial to the men who died and is covered in flowers, cards and messages left by family and friends of the tragic two.

Adam’s fiancee, Kirsty Wright, said the pair were planning to marry in August this year after being together three years.

She paid tribute to the guy who was a ‘brilliant dad’ to her six year-old daughter Alisha.

“Adam was a great guy who was always laughing and the most loving person,” said Kirsty. “He was a brilliant dad to Alisha and was always taking her to the park and liked to take and pick her up from school.”

Adam and Craig were friends who both grew up in Hucknall but Adam had recently moved to Eastwood to live with Kirsty and Alisha.

“He was really close to his mum and his two brothers and younger sister and had loads of friends who will all miss him too,” added Kirsty who has adorned the crash site with photographs of the two together as well as keepsakes and mementoes.

“He didn’t like school but he loved his cars and motorbike and would spend hours tinkering with them.”

Kirsty described Adam as the love of her life in a message left at the scene and wrote ‘never forgotten-always be missed’.

“I just can’t believe what’s happened.”

Three men arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving have been bailed pending enquiries.

The arrests came after two men died in a road crash around 10pm on Sunday 23rd March at Longdale Lane at the junction with Gorse Hill at Ravenshead.

Three men, aged 20, 21, and 28, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and have since been bailed. They are not believed to have been in the vehicle that crashed.
