Trip to Number 10 for Brunts student Katie

Brunts student Katie Shuttleworth whips up a good risotto - so good that her entry into a national cookery competition won her a trip to 10 Downing Street.

The Year 9 student entered her Christmas risotto into the competition organised by the National Obesity Forum and the Walt Disney Company, and came away with the runners-up prize.

The 14-year-old, of Robin Down Lane, went to London earlier this month to receive her award at a special reception at Number 10, with other winners from around the country, competition organisers and Prime Minister’s wife Samantha Cameron.

Katie told Chad: “I chose food technology at school because I wanted to do a fun subject and I thought it would give me an important life skill.

“I decided to make a Christmas risotto because it was around Christmas when I entered the competition and it allowed me to create a dish with lots of Christmas colours.

“When I went to Downing street it didn’t really sink in until I was walking through the gates. It’s really grand and I got to meet all the other winners and tell Samantha Cameron about my recipe.”

The competition was held as part of National Obesity Awareness Week, which aims to tackle the growing public health problem of obesity.

Dad Robert added: “I thought it was great when she first told me. She kept saying that she couldn’t believe she was there.”
