Tributes paid to Notts man found dead in Spain

Tributes have been paid to a Nottinghamshire man who was found dead in Spain.

John Elkington, originally from Hucknall and later lived in Bleasby, went missing in Benidorm last month.

And after an international police search, the Foreign Office confirmed they were providing support to his family after he “sadly died” in the resort.

Family and friends also appealed for help to find him on social media in posts which were shared thousands of times.

John, aged 45, known as ‘Elko’, has been described by friends as an “outgoing guy” who was “always up for fun”.

Colin Hodgson, from Hucknall, said he knew John for a long time.

He said: “I spoke to him in Tesco in Hucknall last July, that was the last time I had a chat with him.

“God bless you John, a pleasure to have known you.”

Pat Kelly wrote to us to say it was such a “sad loss”.

The Nottingham Forest fan had been regularly posting online as he enjoyed his time in the sun, having moved to Benidorm in January.

Fellow Forest Fan known as ‘Kirkie’ also sent a tribute message. He said: “Never has the red flag flown so high.

“Cause chaos in the clouds lad.”

A number of tribute messages were also left for John on our Facebook page.

Debbie Sneath wrote: “Such a tragic end to the search.

“So proud of the work everyone did on social networks to find him

“I hope he realised how many people cared. RIP Elko.”

June Nixon said: “Such sad news, my thoughts are with his family and friends. He was a nice guy.”

PJ Jenkinson commented: “Such sad news and thank you to the young lady who got the message out there that John was missing.. so sad that news was tragic RIP John.”

Tracey Richardson said: “So sad to hear the news, we were all hoping you would show up out of the blue but now you are a star at night.

“Shine bright, you can watch Nottingham Forest from the sky with a view.”

Elena Claire Wilson wrote: “This is such sad news. He was part of our family for over 10 years. RIP John. Love to all your family and friends at this sad time.”

Police have said Mr Elkington’s death is not believed to be suspicious at this time.
