A woman is in a critical condition in hospital after being involved in a road traffic collision on the A38 this morning (Thursday 17th July).

The accident happened at the junction of the A38 with Sutton/Kirkby Road, at about 9.20am and involved a Ford Focus, a heavy goods vehicle, a Ford Transit van, a Mercedes Sprinter and a Vauxhall Corsa.

The driver of the Focus was taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre where she remains in a critical but stable condition.

Others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Firefighters from Ashfield and the rescue unit from Highfields attended the scene and had to cut the woman out of her vehicle.

They also had to clear up engine oil from the road surface.

The road remains closed at Leamington Drive, Penny Emma Way and Orchard Way. Diversions are in place.

Officers hope the road will be re-opened in time for rush hour, but motorists are advised to avoid the area, if possible.
