Nottinghamshire to get £6 million for road repairs

The East Midlands is to get an extra £45.8 million investment in repairs, with Nottinghamshire getting £6,614,000 of that.

The news has been announced by the Department for Transport, who have revealed how the £420 million announced in the budget will be spent. The latest funding brings the total funds for roads in the East Midlands for this year to over £151 million.

Next year (2019-2020), the East Midlands will get £108 million from the Local Highways Maintenance and Integrated Transport Block funds, which will go towards repairing roads and investing in small safety, bus priority or walking and cycling schemes.

Roads Minister Jesse Noman said: “Potholes are a huge problem for all road users, and too often we see issues occurring at the same place time after time.

“That is why the government is investing more in improving our roads than at any time before - £15 billion between 2015 and 2020 and a further £28.8 billion to 2025. Plus an immediate extra £420 million for potholes and local road maintenance just this year.

“The East Midlands will be getting an extra £45 million this winter to keep its roads in good condition to keep drivers and cyclists safe.”

Nottinghamshire County Council’s Communities and Place Committee chairman, Councillor John Cottee said: “We welcome today’s government announcement of an extra £6.6m for road repairs across the county.

"There’s no doubt that last year’s harsh winter took its toll on Nottinghamshire roads which meant that our highways team had to repair 95,000 potholes between January and August - nearly twice as many over the same time period as the previous year. This extra money will allow us to undertake further works to put right this damage and consider new plant and machinery for the tackling the problem.

“And last week we approved a £27.6m investment in Nottinghamshire’s transport infrastructure which involves repairing more than 200 roads over the next financial year. This takes forward our budget plans for 2019/20, demonstrating our commitment to improving our 2,600 miles of road network.

“We continue to provide the best possible value for money in terms of our road repairs and resurfacing by making the ‘right repair at the right time’ to avoid larger repair bills in years to come, cut congestion and make our roads safer.”

Around £4.25m of the four-year cash pot set up by the county council in 2018 to invest in the Nottinghamshire’s roads will be spent during the next 12 months.
