TRAFFIC: Two lanes closed on M1 after HGV smash

Drivers are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys this afternoon following a collision on the M1 in Leicestershire involving a HGV which has spilled 100 litres of diesel onto the carriageway.

Two lanes of the motorway are currently closed in both directions between junctions 23 at Loughborough and 23A near East Midlands Airport after the vehicle collided with and damaged up to 400 metres of the central barrier on the northbound carriageway.

It crossed over to the southbound carriageway and also damaged a lamp column in the process.

Recovery is at the scene and traffic is being directed past the incident using lane 1 northbound and the hard shoulder and lane 1 southbound.

Highways England is advising drivers to allow extra time for their journeys and to use alternative routes where possible.
