Sutton residents fear the worst about 'dangerous' parking on busy estate

Residents on a Sutton estate have said someone is “going to get seriously hurt” if “dangerous” parking on a busy road is not addressed.

They say Carsic Lane is an “accident waiting to happen”, after the number of cars parking on the road has steadily increased in recent years.

The road is a heavily-trafficked bus route into the estate, but cars parking on the road have meant buses are often unable to pass through – and some say they have seen incidents which “could have resulted in fatality”.

Issues with dangerous parking on Carsic Lane, which is close to Lammas Leisure Centre and Sutton town centre, have been raised before and residents are calling on councils to listen to their concerns.

Anne Bradshaw, who lives on Carsic Lane, said: “The build up of parked vehicles is getting way out of hand, it’s a danger to pedestrians and road users alike.

“They park everywhere and anywhere, and I know of several incidents that could have resulted in an injury or even worst fatality.

“It’s horrendous, you dice with death trying to cross the road never mind entering or exiting your own driveway.”

Cathy Mason, a resident and former Labour councillor for the area, has hit out at the council and says safety should be a "higher priority” for residents.

She claims that residents on the estate called for £32,000 in public realm section 106 funding to be spent mitigating the impact on residents, but that they were ignored.

She said: “The heavily-trafficked bus route into Carsic Estate has had parking issues for a number of years, this has now reached dangerous levels.

“There is £32,000 in public realm funding available, and residents have asked that it be put to use to mitigate this impact on the local community.

“However, the ruling administration declined our request, awarding the funding to Portland Square and New Cross areas.

“Sutton town is supposed to be benefiting from £25 million? You would think given this that resident safety would be a higher priority than a new bench.”

Ashfield District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council have been contacted for a comment.
