Town’s retailers report bumper festive period and rise in sales

The Christmas period has been a successful one for many Mansfield town centre businesses, according to reports from managers and owners.

A number of retailers, from independent companies to branches of national chains, have told Chad that sales have been up on previous years.

Sarah Nelson, manager of the Mansfield Business Improvement District (BID), said: “The news is to be welcomed, as the figures themselves do the talking; Mansfield is a vibrant town centre with a lot of success stories that we should all be proud of.”

Crawshaws Butchers, in Westgate, reported an increase in sales of between 10 and 15 per cent on the December 2012, while Xibit jewellers, in Market Street, recorded an increase of 30 per cent.

Superdrug, in Stockwell Gate, reported a December sales increase of 6.2 per cent, with average spend up 2.2 per cent.

Sue Nelson, from the Glazey Place, in White Hart Street, said: “Sales far exceeded my expectations for Christmas with children’s parties fully booking every Sunday, lots of Saturdays and many week day evenings.

“At a rough guess I would say sales were up 50 per cent on last December for me.”

Mandy Hague from Dorothy Perkins, inWest Gate, said: “Our December sales have been up by nine per cent on December 2012 and footfall has also been up..”

The Four Seasons Centre recorded its busiest ever Boxing Day, with more than 30,000 visitors, representing a seven per cent increase on last year.

Centre manager Rebekah O’Neill said: “

“Throughout 2013, a total of 8,041,119 people visited Four Seasons and the signs are bright for a busy and vibrant 2014.”

John Slack, from W Slack and Sons, in Rosemary Street, added: “December 2013 was our busiest ever month and 2013 was our best ever year. It’s quite a success story.”

And he added: “On a daily basis we attract visitors to our store in Mansfield who have travelled hundreds of miles.”

More than 4,700 people attended a Christmas market, organised by the BID, that took place in the Market Place on 12th December.
