Town thief of 13 years is handed ASBO

Shirley Storer, 32, of Grove Road, Church Warsop, has caused ongoing problems for town centre and retail park shop workers due to her persistent thieving and aggressive behaviour.

In November 2013, she was imprisoned for four months after admitting theft from a number of shops in Mansfield including gift boxes from Boots and items from Sainsbury’s and Co-op.

The ASBO has been issued at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court following action by Nottinghamshire Police, Mansfield District Council and team and Ashfield and Mansfield District Councils’ Legal Shared Service.

If Storer breaches the order, which runs until 30 April 2016, she faces a fine or prison sentence of up to five years.

“Storer’s ASBO marks another success story for Operation Pegger - our campaign to target shoplifting and theft in Mansfield,” said police constable Simon Lacey.

“She has regularly operated in Mansfield shops and has a history of intimidating security staff who tried to stop her, with little regard for authority or the law.”

The conditions of the ASBO are that Storer should not:

* Enter the retail premises on St Peter’s and Portland Retail Parks, Mansfield, nor Boots in the Four Seasons Shopping Centre, Mansfield.

* Enter Rosemary Street Garage, Cost Cutters in Moor Lane, nor Sainsbury’s in Westfield Lane, Mansfield.

* Behave in a way or use obscene language which causes harassment, alarm, annoyance or distress to any person in the county.

* Incite or encourage any other person to do the same.

Coun Mick Barton, Portfolio holder for public protection at Mansfield District Council, said: “Town centre staff and members of the public should not have to experience behaviour of this kind.

“This ASBO should also serve as a reminder to others that behaving in this way will not be tolerated in Mansfield.”
