Town heritage uncovered

Visitors to Eastwood’s DH Lawrence Heritage Centre can discover more about local heritage at an event next month.

The heritage day, at the centre on Mansfield Road, will celebrate local heritage with a talk about local dialect, have-a-go activities and a Victorian curiosity show.

Ex-miner and local historian David Amos will offer a light-hearted look at the local dialect of the North Erewash region of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire in a talk entitled ‘Ay up me duck’.

Lynda Kinnard from Rebellious Rag will demonstrate the art of rag rugging in a workshop that will get locals having a go, and a Victorian travelling fairground curiosity show will reveal their collection of curious objects.

There will be a host of vintage games such as wooden whip and top, diabolos, humming tops and skipping ropes for all the family to enjoy.

Local heritage stalls, displays, a handling collection and Victorian dress-up will also feature at the event.

Everybody is welcome on Sunday July 26 from 11am until 3pm.

DH Lawrence Bistro will be open serving light bites and refreshments.

Also coming up at the heritage centre, a local group of contemporary textile artists will showcase their latest creations in a special exhibition.

Element, a group of six contemporary textile artists who share a passion for creating original textile work, will launch their new exhibition, ‘Destinations’ in the Rainbow Gallery on Mansfield Road on July 17.

The exhibition is inspired by their visits to places both near and far, from photographs and from happy memories.

It is running until August 23 between 10am and 5pm Tuesday to Sunday.

DH Lawrence Heritage is a multi-award winning visitor attraction based around two highly-acclaimed sites.

The attraction brings together a museum, heritage centre, gift shop, art gallery, meeting room facility, civil wedding venue and the DH Lawrence Bistro.

DH Lawrence Heritage, which includes the Lawrence Heritage Centre and the Birthplace Museum, is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am until 5pm (4pm in winter). The Birthplace Museum opens at 11am. Spaces are limited so please call to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
