THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Don’t think bigotry isn’t happening right here too

Of course when I sit down to write these ‘thoughts for the day’ I do know that I am only offering my opinion, and that it is likely that some people, especially of faith, will disagree with me.

But if it gets people thinking and talking then that’s OK by me.

I have had some quite robust comments made to me by some, mostly anonymous readers, and again they are entitled to their opinions although they sometimes get confused and think their opinions are facts just because they quote the Bible.

There are certainly parts of the bible which contain some very useful lessons for life, for example how man should love his fellow man - although that’s one rule the religious find less keen to accept.

Of course cherry picking little sections from any religious text to back up an argument is commonplace,especially in the USA, and of late it has been used to shape legislation that allows businesses to act in a discriminatory way against same sex marriage and the LGBT community.

There is even a Presidential candidate who proudly proclaims there is no place for homosexuals and atheists in HIS America.

Thanks goodness we live in the UK where attitudes are more open…(I wish!)

We can tut our disapproval at such blatant bigotry but do not think it isn’t happening here, because it surely is and it I wish to commend Rev Keith Hebden for his recent article about this very matter.

We may have differing views on religion, but we can sing off the same hymn sheet when it comes to a world without prejudice.
