Tennis match led to couple’s diamond day

It was game,set and match, for a devoted Cinderhill couple who have gone on to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary more than 62-years after their first meeting on a tennis court!

Arthur and Lorna Read, of Kelstern Close, celebrated their special milestone with a party for family and friends at their home where they have lived for the past 57-years.

Following a first date at the cinema and a two year courtship they tied the knot at StMary’s Church in Bulwell and honeymooned in Guernsey.

Arthur, 86 and Lorna, 82, both originate from Bulwell and were educated at Quarry Road School in the town.

During a long and active working career Arthur served in the Royal Signals for six-years and taught woodwork and metalwork at the Ellis School for 10-years before working for a further 19-years employed as a meter reader with British Gas.

Lorna,who attended Manning School was employed for nine-years as a shorthand typist at the City Treasurers Office situated inside the Council House.A stalwart at Christ Church in Cinderhill, she is secretary of the Three Crosses Mothers Union and has served the Cinderhill Ladies Group for more than 30-years.

The couple who have three children,seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, often reminisce about their time together as members of Bulwell’s Rigley’s Tennis Club where they first met.

“It has been a match made in heaven and our lives have been blessed with a wonderful family and many special friends said Lorna. “We have been privileged to tour the UK in our motor home for eight years before enjoying the luxury of holidays in America and Cuba.

“Sixty years of marriage is a wonderful achievement and its success has been built on the the most important things in life which are good health, love, friendship and togetherness..”
