Inspectors said children at Sherwood Junior School were on course to leave with above average standards - especially in maths - and their behaviour was good.

Headteacher Helen Duffy said: “We are all really proud. Parents have played a big part and have really supported the school to help us get our good judgement.

“Progress in maths is down to good quality teaching and a good base of knowledge from teachers.”

The report stated that pupils were set work which made them think hard and have a good understanding of what they needed to do next.

Progress monitoring at the school was complimented by the inspectors, who said pupils’ progress was thoroughly checked with excellent feedback given on how to improve further.

Ms Duffy was pleased that inspectors noted a positive learning atmosphere in classes and around school and pupils enjoyed attending, due to good relations with staff.

She added: “The pupils’ good behaviour is down to trust, and knowing if they are upset they can talk to an adult about that.

“Therefore, they have a lot of respect for our teachers.”

Inspectors said Sherwood Junior School was not given an outstanding grade because:

l The progress of pupils in reading and writing was not as strong as that in mathematics and in Years 3 and 4 it was not as fast as in Years 5 and 6

l Governors did not always have a sharp enough understanding of measuring the impact of current school initiatives on pupils’ progress

l During discussions with their teachers and classmates, the range of pupils’ vocabulary and their questioning skills were not always extended well enough

Ms Duffy said: “English has progressed repeatedly over a short period of time - that is down to parents putting in time with reading and writing.

“This extra experience has really helped.”

“We have put new governing body with a good skill set, which will help to become and outstanding school.”
