Takeover Radio celebrates after funding boost

The funding, which totals £7,897, will be used to recruit young adults, aged between 18 and 25, to take part in the Takeover Radio reporting team, allowing them to learn practical skills including presenting, journalism, web site design and video production.

An experienced Project Manager will also be appointed thanks to the funding and will work with the participants over a 10-month period, providing them with the support and guidance they need while teaching them the skills that will benefit them long after the project has finished.

Sutton Youth Radio has a listenership of over 25,000 and provides disadvantaged children from the local community with a space to be creative, express themselves and create their own radio shows.

Phil Riley, Director at Sutton Youth Radio, comments: “When young people join the radio station they are given the opportunity to create and produce their own radio shows. Not only do they have a fun time doing this, but they also get to learn practical skills such as communication, time keeping, team work, punctuality and commitment which are transferable and benefit those taking part when

they start college, university or enter into the world of work.

“The funding received from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust means that we’re able to extend the programme and give our students the time they need to develop their own skills and build up their confidence at their own pace.”

Not only is this a fun way to learn, but it is valuable experience that will benefit young people as they move into higher education or enter the workplace.”

“Poor skills remain a significant barrier to employment for many coalfield residents but by working with organisations such as Sutton Youth Radio we are able to teach young adults important workplace skills and give them a bright future.”

As the organisation has become a member of Coalfield Community Investment Programme it will continue to be supported by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and will have access to support including resources and services such as help with third-party funding applications and bid-writing, to tips on effective promotion and marketing.
