Sutton youth project off to a good start

Young people in Sutton can enjoy an action packed programme of activities at the weekends thanks to an initiative led by Ashfield organisations.

Project Sub Zero has got off to a good start after several organisations joined forces to provide a mix of detached work, ice skating, street dance, performing arts and DJ skills on Friday and Saturday nights to stop anti-social behaviour.

Organisers have said the programme has got off to a great start with dozens of young people joining football on the Astro Turf at Sutton Lawn and enjoying ice skating at Everyone Active Lammas Leisure Centre.

Alfie Smith, project leader from Catch-22, said: “Everyone involved is really pleased with how everything is going so far and there is much more to come. The organisations involved are providing activities that young people told us they wanted and outreach workers are empowering positive role models within the groups to signpost the young people to the activities.”

The organisations involved, including Ashfield District Council’s Sports Development Forum, Catch-22, Everyone Active, Nottinghamshire County Council, Sutton Academy, Takeover Radio and YMCA Nottinghamshire, started the project to prevent large groups of youths gathering at McDonalds. The area was a known hot spot for anti-social behaviour.

Funded by Ashfield Community Safety Partnership, January will see more options on offer to young people.
