A Sutton woman was fined more than £500 for littering after she was caught dropping a cigarette.

Caroline Rowley (26) of Church Street, Sutton, was ordered to pay £584 in fines and charges after a neighbourhood warden saw her drop a cigarette outside Mansfield bus station on February 8.

No plea was entered and the matter was proved in her absence.

Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court fined Rowley £440 on June 14 and ordered her to pay a contribution towards prosecution costs of £100 and a victim surcharge of £44.

The total of £584 is to be paid in full by 28 June 2017.

Councillor Bill Drewett, Portfolio Holder for Safer Communities, said: "We take littering seriously and we will prosecute those who drop litter. There are plenty of litter bins around the town, so there's no excuse for not using them. It could end up being a costly mistake, so the advice is to dispose of your litter properly - and avoid a hefty fine and a criminal record."
