STAFF at Sutton’s Wilkinson store held a fundraising event for their chosen charity of the year Age UK.
Like the Ashfield Chad, Wilkinson has chosen to support the charity for the coming year by raising funds and awareness to help people in later life.
And last month, employees at the Sutton branch got into the spirit of the project with a Colour Splash Fun Day which aimed to raise money and entertain customers.
Taking inspiration from the colourful Age UK logo, staff dressed the shop and themselves in the charity’s colours and held a tombola for customers.
Store manager Gary Elleston said: “We’re delighted to be supporting Age UK as our 2011 Charity of the Year, as the challenge facing people in later life is an issue that we all feel very strongly about.
“We had a great time entertaining our customers with this fun-packed event.
“We’re hoping to raise as much as we can to help make a real difference to the lives of older people.”
And director of fundraising at Age UK, Paul Farthing, added: “All the funds raised by Wilkinson will go a long way towards supporting older people.
“Changes in society mean that millions of people are currently living alone in later life, with many facing loneliness and depression.
“Through our work we fund a range of social activities helping older people have fun, keep well and make friends – ensuring people can make the most of later life.”
Age UK offers a range of services to people in the Ashfield area, including Kindred Spirits (helping people to make friends through activities such as day trips), a shopping service, counselling, carer support, community outreach advice, exercise groups along with regular lunch clubs held throughout the district.
