Sutton: National audience for Brierley’s ‘cracking’ jokes

Families across the country will be raising a smile over their Christmas lunch thanks to jokes written by pupils from a Sutton school.

Youngsters across 12 classes at Brierley Forest Primary, on Westbourne View, were invited to come up with their best gags for use in crackers manufactured by Wilko Stores.

The exciting challenge formed part of a wider project designed to improve writing skills and also encouraged interaction between pupils and their parents.

“It was certainly one of the more fun pieces of homework they will have had,” said Dan Chambers, teacher of a year four group and who wrote to Wilko with his idea.

“It was something all the kids really got involved in and really enjoyed. I know they are all very excited that on Christmas day people everywhere will be reading their jokes.

“We had absolutely loads of jokes to sort through, but in the end we had to narrow it down to two from each of the classes.”

The jokes were eventually chosen by the school council and the winnings entries read out in a special assembly.

It is something Mr Chambers in keen on repeating next year after such a terrific response.

He said: “There were lots of good jokes, but I think the most popular, one of my favourites, is: “Why did the toilet roll down the hill? Because it needed to get to the bottom.”

“It was great to mix something where all the kids could get involved and have fun with something that also has educational benefits too.”

Gary Elleston, store manager of Wilko in Sutton, who are stocking the crackers, said: “The children at Brierley Forest Primary School have done a sterling job at selecting the jokes for our Christmas crackers.

“They’ve made everyone in our team chuckle and we know everyone who reads and hears them on Christmas Day will be smiling from ear to ear.

“As a community-based retailer, we’re always really keen to work with schools and local organisations, so this partnership was the perfect opportunity.

“We knew Brierley Forest would have some real comedians and they didn’t let us down!

“We’ve felt great pride in telling customers that the jokes in the crackers they’re buying were ‘made in Sutton’ and we hope the children feel the same.”
