Neil Caudwell took a blowtorch, gas cannisters and a boltcropper from the Mansfield Road store on March 3, but was spotted by a security guard and detained outside.

The theft follows a conviction for a similar offence on February 8, for which he received a community order.

“He told police he intended to keep the items and was going to use them for his own DIY activities,” said prosecutor Robert Carr.

Emma Cornell, mitigating, said he had suffered from depression following the death of his wife in 2015, and is a dad of four.

“He was her carer for four or five years,” she said. “Since her death he has found himself with a lot of time on his hands. He is ashamed of his behaviour.”

She said he had since been prescribed a stronger dose of anti-depressants.

Caudwell, 55, of Rowan Croft, Huthwaite, admitted the theft when he appeared at Mansfield Magistrates Court, on Friday.

The last order was revoked and a new 12 month community order was imposed with ten rehabilitation activity requirement days and 40 hours of unpaid work.

No order for costs was made, but he must pay an £85 government surcharge.
