Sutton barman scores knockout with Kylie

Steve Alexander (27), who works at Sutton’s Junction Bar & Restaurant, got the thumbs up from the Aussie superstar after delivering a knock-out performance of Will Young’s Your Game.

The singer, who is originally from Glasgow but now lives in Mansfield, said watching the performance at a friend’s house was one of the most surreal experiences ever he has ever had.

“The initial dread of waiting for it to come on is very scary, but everyone was cheering at the TV,” said Steve. “I enjoyed it.

The Voice involves contestants performing to a celebrity panel of four coaches who sit with their backs turned.

If coaches like a performance they turn around to signal their interest in working with the artist.

“It gets more nerve-wracking as you go along,” said Steve. “I was really, really nervous on the day. I have been singing for years but did not expect to be as nervous as I was.

“You do a rehearsal beforehand with empty chairs so that gives you an idea of what it will be like.”

But Steve said nothing could prepare him for the real deal.

“As soon as I saw Kylie standing up and dancing around I thought ‘please turn around’ and when she did I was so happy.

“When Tom Jones turned around at the end that was a nice surprise.”

But, despite being begged by the Welsh legend, Steve picked Minogue to be mentor in his quest for the ultimate prize of a recording contract.

Said Steve: “You meet everyone after your performance and have a quick chat for a bit of extra critique and encouragement.

“Kylie was really lovely and genuine. Now it is just getting ready for the next round.

“I have to work with her a lot more closely in the coming stages so I will get to know her.”

The gifted singer will now prepare to go up against another contender from team Kylie.

Steve has been singing since he was a little boy and studied music at drama school.

He is a seasoned performer, experienced at everything from open mic and acoustic nights to weddings.

The Scots singer moved to Mansfield to be closer to London for rehearsals then found work as a bar manager for Mansfield company andwhynot.

His musical influences are wide, but favourites include Michael Buble, Stevie Wonder and Mariah Carey.
