Sun may have blinded pensioner injured in Derbyshire road smash

A 67-year-old woman has undergone surgery after a crash which caused hours of travel delays.

The woman’s Peugeot collided with the back of a lorry parked in a lay-by on the A38 at Ripley at about 1.30pm yesterday.

Police closed both carriageways of the road to allow the air ambulance to land.

The woman was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham where was treated for unknown injuries.

Her condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

A Derbyshire police spokesman said: “The sun was quite low at the time and the driver may have been blinded.”

The road reopened at about 4pm.
