Summer playschemes have received a funding boost

Summer playschemes have received a funding boost thanks to Nottinghamshire County Council.

The county council’s Local Improvement Scheme is funding more than a dozen summer playschemes this year after receiving applications from a number of childcare providers, endorsed by local council members.

The money will enable 15 local community groups to lay on vital childcare provision and activities during the summer break.

Coun Gordon Wheeler, vice-chairman of the Communities and Place Committee, which administers the Local Improvement Scheme at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We were delighted with the scale and quality of bids which we received earlier this year for the Local Improvement Scheme. We have been able to award funds to a large number of community groups running play schemes this summer so this money is being put to good use over the coming weeks across the county, providing exciting opportunities for children and their families.”

Among those to receive grants of up to £2,000 are Clipstone Miners Welfare Community Trust, Hetts Lane Holiday Club in Warsop, Lighthouse in Mansfield, Pleasley Playscheme and Rainworth and Blidworth Detached Youth Project.

Claire Penny, chief executive officer and chair of the trustee board at Rainworth and Blidworth Detached Youth Project, said: “Our Summer Play Scheme supports more than 60 local families to enjoy activities that would otherwise be unaffordable. Without continued support from Nottinghamshire County Council we know that local children would suffer from the effects of food poverty, a lack of social engagement and be more likely to be involved in anti-social behaviour.”

Awards of more than £2m were made to 201 voluntary organisations across the county.
