Successful sewing business proves shopping is not all about online

In the age of online shopping, a business at Sutton is taking part in a nationwide event designed to remind people that going to a real store can still be well worthwhile.

Sewilicious Fabrics, run by Jenny Tindall on Outram Street, is promising “a day of stitchy fun” at the ‘Sew Saturday’ event on October 6 that is doubling up as an open day at the store.

It’s the brainchild of ‘Sew’ magazine, whose spokeswoman said: “The idea is to show people what’s great about going to a bricks-and-mortar store, rather than shopping online.

“You can see and touch fabrics, ask the staff for advice, take part in workshops and meet like-minded stitchers.”

Mum Jenny first launched Sewilicious four years ago at the Ashfield Business Hub in the Idlewells Shopping Centre after learning to sew in adult education classes at Sutton Centre. Since then, the business has gone from strength to strength.

Jenny said: “We were lucky enough to move into our current shop in January. The craft industry has really taken off over the last five years, and people are really eager to learn a new skill.

“We sell fabrics and patterns, and other things needed for sewing, and also hold live sewing demonstrations.

“However, our main focus is on our workshops, where we teach sewing and other skills, hold social classes and go out on events.”

Star guests at the open day will be Tracey Symonds, a popular contestant last year on the hit TV show, ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’, and Coun Jason Zadrozny, leader of Ashfield District Council.

There will also be taster sessions, a special cake, a bake sale and a raffle and tombola to raise money for Bracken Hill Special School in Kirkby, which is attended by Jenny’s disabled daughter.
