A plan to breathe new life into Mansfield town centre could be granted funding tomorrow.

The district council wants to commission an urban design study of the Stockwell Gate area before new development is given the go-ahead.

Private developers have acquired an option on the former Courtaulds factory, on Belvedere Street.

But planning chiefs at the council want to take a comprehensive look at the area between the bus and railway stations before any planning application for the factory is considered.

Head of Planning Mel Middleton said: The aim of the study is to ensure that development of the area takes place in a comprehensive manner and makes the maximum contribution to the regeneration and image of the town centre.

A master plan and a full economic assessment of the development proposals will be put together at a cost of 30,000.

A third of that cash will come from the Single Regneration Budget and another 10,000 will be sought from the council s Economic Development Committee tomorrow.

A bid for the balance has been submitted to the East Midlands Development Agency.

Consultants to carry out the study are expected to be appointed in February.

Similar studies are about to be carried out in Warsop town centre and atindustrial development land in the Southwell Road area.
