Southwell Workhouse celebrates anniversary

The Workhouse at Southwell is celebrating 10 years of opening its doors to the public - and launches its new season on the extra ‘leap year’ day, 29th February.

And to start the anniversary year off in style, free entry to all visitors is being offered on that day when a new exhibition, ‘10 years of Housekeeping at The Workhouse’, will be opening.

Built in 1824 as a place of last resort for the poor and destitute and having continued to fulfil this role well into the 1980s, The Workhouse found itself under threat from development into residential flats.

The National Trust then intervened to acquire the property, which was considered to be the ‘best preserved workhouse standing in England’.

After lengthy restoration The Workhouse opened its door to the public on 13th March 2002.

Since then over 350,000 people have visited the property to find out more about the lives of those who lived and worked there.

‘As well as the ever popular Graft, Gruel and Good-For-Nothings Days, Family Fun Days and Easter Trails, special events planned for 2012 include a Victorian Village Fete and Community Drama Weekend.
