Independent shops in Southwell are launching their countdown to Christmas with a late-night shopping event next week.

There are plans for mince pies, mulled wine, chestnuts and musical entertainment by pupils from the nearby Minster School among others.

The evening next Thursday, 5th December, is part of a drive launched by the local traders - who recently set up their own website - in a bid to boost customer numbers throughout the yuletide.

The easy-to-use website simply acts as a directory for the local businesses and providing links to each of their own web addresses.

As part of the campaign towards Christmas, it will also see shops remaining open in Southwell on Sundays throughout December.

Sarah Payne, of the Southwell Tourist Information Centre said the event will involve the entire community.

She said: “The whole town has been invited to take part through the schools, music and local talents of all kinds and we are promoting it throughout Nottinghamshire in the hope of attracting more ‘local’ people to share in what is not too far from home.

“In these times of small, independent retailers battling hard to keep up against the power of chain stores and the internet we feel that Southwell’s small, unique shops still have a lot to offer.”

The event will begin at 5.30pm.
