Sophie calls time on dog fouling

Sophie Schimanske, 6 beat strong competition from schoolmates at John Davies School to create a poster to be displayed around the village after residents became sick of the mess.

Councillor for Huthwaite and Brierley, Councillor Lee Anderson met up with locals and decided that the best way to highlight the problem would be to get his old school involved.

Pupils at John Davies School were invited to design their very own anti-dog fouling poster to put up around the village.

The standard was extremely high and the winner was picked by local councillors and residents.

Sophie said: ”I was very happy to have won”.

Her winning design impressed officials at ADC so much that they decided to have it transferred on to a brand new litter bin donated by local business Townscape Ltd.

The bin is outside the main entrance to John Davies School so dog walkers will see the poster every time they walk by.

The runners up will all have their designs put up around Brierley Park and around the village.

Coun Anderson said: “ The majority of dog owners in our village are very responsible and pick up their mess but unfortunately we do have a minority who simply will not do the right thing.

“It is a pet hate of mine and I really think that getting this message through to children at an early age is vital as they will become the next generation of dog owners.”
