Somercotes Infant and Nursery School put into special measures

Somercotes Infant and Nursery School has been placed into special measures, following visit from Government education inspectors.

The school, in Nottingham Road, was visited by inspectors on June 24 and 25, who found there was a weaknesses in leadership and management, achievement and teaching.

In their report, inspectors said that leadership was “disjointed” and “had not demonstrated the capacity to secure improvement”.Derbyshire County Council has now drafted in an acting head teacher Janet Walls to oversee leadership at the school while the current head teacher is off sick.

Mrs Walls said: “I know this is a very difficult time for everyone involved but I’d like to reassure parents that we are committed to giving every pupil the education they deserve.

“Although I have only been at the school for a short time I am already confident that staff are focused on raising standards, building relationships and doing the very best for the children.

“We are working with the county council and have taken on board the inspectors’ comments to ensure we raise expectations and achievement across the board.”

To improve, teachers must have high expectations for pupils’ progress, raise pupils’ achievement and ensure all leaders can contribute towards improvement.

However, when they visited the inspectors found strengths including: pupils’ relate well to staff and feel well cared for; the breakfast club makes a good contribution to pupils’ social development; the school is making good use of extra sports funding to improve pupils’ enjoyment of, and participation rates in, sporting activities.

Coun Caitlin Bisknell, the county council’s deputy cabinet member for children and young people, said: “We only became aware of the issues with leadership and management at Somercotes recently.

“We have now taken swift action to appoint an acting head teacher and we are working closely with the whole school community - staff, governors and parents - to address the issues raised.

“We are confident that by working together the school can begin to look to the future.”
