The County Council said gritting teams took to the roads at just after 6pm last night and had completed all published main routes by 10.15pm. A second run on main routes took place between 1am and 4.45am.

In between, the crews also salted snow routes -- other important, additional, roads which are salted when snow or periods of prolonged freezing are forecast.

And in the north of the county snow plough drivers were operating from 2am.

Gritting crews are due to take to the county’s roads again tonight from 7pm. Overnight weather is forecast to be largely dry and cold but with the possibility of the odd light winter flurry in the early hours of Thursday.

Road surface temperatures are set to fall below freezing again, with a risk of icy patches in places.
