Skegness bike ride to remember Kirkby-in-Ashfield man Andrew

Andrew Pridmore’s brave three-year battle against pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), a rare cancer of the appendix, ended in April at the age of 35.

Now around 30 riders who knew the formerAshfield School pupil are riding the 84-miles from the builders merchants he ran in Kirkby, SP Stow, to holiday resort Skegness in his honour.

It follows the same route ‘Prid’, as he was best known, pedalled when helping to raise money for Ashfield Youth Football Club in the 1990s.

The money raised from the event on Sunday 29th September will be donated to the John Eastwood Hospice where Andrew spent more than 100 days in the lead up to his death.

“For some of us it is the first time we have got on a bike for 20 years, since that original bike ride in some cases, so there were a few complaining of being saddle sore when we first started training,” said friend Matthew Millar, who is one of the team riding to the Lincolnshire coast.

“Most of us have got quite a few more grey hairs these days and in a lot of cases a lot less hair too!

“We have been training hard. It will be a real challenge, but also tremendous fun.”

The ride is being organised by Simon Pridmore, Andrew’s brother, Terry Mallaburn and Bob Stimpson.

Simon and Terry are tackling the trip on a tandem and boast a combined age of 106.

Riders will set off in groups at five-minute intervals starting at 6am in the morning.

Matthew added: “‘Prid’ said he felt safe during his time at the John Eastwood Hospice. It’s a terrfic cause and hopefully we can do him proud.”
