Skegby Bottoms car boot sales to continue after planning permission granted

Permission has been granted, until October 2020, to hold sales on Tuesdays, between 10am and 3pm, between March and October.

Although planning permission has just been granted, the car boot sales have previously been held at Skegby Bottoms.

Councillor Anthony Brewer, Chairman of Ashfield District Council and ward councillor for Skegby said: “The applicant was allowed to run the car boot sale, as they were utilising permitted development rights, which permit them to hold the car boot sale for a total of 14 days per year.

“This application was seeking to allow the car boot sale to run on additional days through the months of March to October. It will still continue to run on Tuesdays between the hours of 10am to 3pm only.”

Residents had raised concerns about parking problems, traffic congestion, highway safety and cars blocking drives.

One objector said: “I think the car boot sale is in totally the wrong place.

“There is no designated parking and the roads around it get clogged up with cars, and the bus stop is blocked.

“I have relatives in the area and it is impossible to visit them when the boot sale is on because of parking problems.

“I think it is quite dangerous on boot sale day.”

Another objection said: “The area of Skegby in which the proposed car boot sales would take place is a picturesque, quiet area which is used by walkers, cyclists, and horse riders on a daily basis.

“I cannot see any advantage for the people that live in, or use the area.”

However, there were also comments in support of the application, as a car boot sale would provide a benefit to the community, and attract visitors to the village.

One resident said: “Nice market helps the area and the people, and not much else happening in Skegby.

Another comment on the application said: “I feel it adds to the community spirit, and is an attraction to the village.”
