Singer thanks voters for support

Kirkby opera singer Lucy Kay has thanked the public for their support after she narrowly missed out on landing the Britain’s Got Talent crown.

The 25-year-old faced a nervous wait over whether she would actually compete in the final of the hit ITV talent show after losing her voice on the morning of the show.

But the former member of Mansfield’s famous Cantamus choir regained her voice after resting all day and went on to claim second spot after singing what judge Simon Cowell described as a ‘gutsy’ choice of song.

The former Ashfield School pupil selected iconic Italia ‘90 World Cup song Nessun Dorma, which is typically sung by men, as her choice.

Said Lucy: “I felt excited and happy that I came second because I never imagined I would in a million years.

“I lost my voice in the morning and was put on vocal rest all day. The producers were quite worried that I would not be able to perform.

“So, coming second was completely unexpected.”

“I am gutted that I was not on top form but these things happen and it was meant to be.”

Lucy, who is believed to be close to signing a record deal with a major label, will now work alongside winners Collabro’s and will be recording a track on their album.

But for now, Lucy is now taking a well-earned rest after the hard work she has put into the show and completing her course at Glasgow music college.

She said: “I do not have a job and things are hard at the moment but I want to keep singing.

“I would like to be the next Katherine Jenkins. It would be nice to say a thank you to all the people who voted for me as well.

“It gave me a real lift coming second and celebrities often forget the reason they are where they are is the public who support them.”

But not all members of the public were so supportive during Lucy’s time on Britain’s Got Talent. Abuse from Twitter trolls about her voice and her appearance brought memories of fierce bullying from her youth flooding back.

She added: “I’ve had a lot of people bad-mouth me over my teeth, but I refuse to conform to shallow beauty expectations.”
