Residents are being invited to sign up to learn something new this summer with Derbyshire County Council Adult Community Education Service.

There are more than 2,000 daytime and evening courses and activities on offer this year providing opportunities for people to study for new qualifications or explore new hobbies and interests.

More Saturday workshops and shorter courses are also available for people who do not want to commit to a whole term and the online course-search has been revamped to help learners find the right course for them.

The summer term starts on Monday 28 April and people can sign up now.

Coun Damien Greenhalgh, Derbyshire County Council’s deputy cabinet member for children and young people, said: “We have an excellent choice of courses on offer and I hope that people will be inspired to join us and learn something new, brush up on their skills or revitalise a past hobby.

“We also have lots of opportunities for those who want to improve their job prospects and as well as our many free courses we’ve kept costs as reasonable as possible to make sure everyone can take part.”

Subjects include arts and crafts, baking, garden design, computing, health and wellbeing, literacy and numeracy, languages and IT, child care, personal development and opportunities for families to learn together.

There are also free courses to help people get back into work such as English and maths tuition, CV writing, job applications and interview skills, advice on starting your own business and a range of traineeships and apprenticeships to help get youngsters on a career path. Students can gain professional qualifications in practical skills like plumbing and the council’s Eco Centre at Middleton by Wirksworth offers a growing range of courses to inspire greener living.

Gift vouchers are available in denominations of £5, £10, £20 and £50 which can be put towards the cost of courses.
