Show supports charity

A charity for people with learning disabilities is gearing up for two days of fundraising at a county show.

Reach Learning Disability will be at this year’s Nottinghamshire County Show.

Last year the show supported Nottingham Young Farmers as its chosen charity and raised just under £800.

This year, the show has pledged to give its full backing to the Nottinghamshire charity, which was chosen by this year’s county show president.

As part of the partnership, Newark Showground has provided trade space for the charity at the 133rd show on the May 14 and 15.

Anna Joyce, Reach’s social enterprise and events manager, said: “We are all delighted that Notts County Show has chosen Reach as its official charity for 2016.

“We currently help more than 200 people with learning disabilities and we have to raise £100,000 in each year just to maintain our current level of services. Its support like this from the county show which really helps us to keep the show on the road and enable us to sustain the support.

People often assume that people with learning disabilities are ‘looked after’ by the state. It is true that some of our services are partly sustained by income from our clients’ personal budgets but this just covers a small proportion of our costs.

“Come and visit us at our stand at the show to find out more about what we do and how the donations will be used.”

Reach - formally known as Southwell Care Project - runs learning courses, social activities, projects, holidays and days out to enable people with learning disabilities to live a life like any other in their own community.

The activities run from four bases in Southwell, Newark, and Mansfield and the Flower Pod - where the charity’s horticultural activities take place. Reach also run short-term courses in other localities across the county.
