Shirebrook Academy praised for GCSEs

A Shirebrook school has been recognised as one of the best schools in the country for the work it does with pupils studying for their GCSEs.

Shirebrook Academy, in Common Lane, has received the national award for the value it adds to pupils’ education experience.

The school was awarded the SSAT Education Outcomes Award for being in the top 20 per cent of schools nationally for progress made by pupils between their key stage 2 results at primary school and their GCSE results at age 16.

The results were found after Department for Education data for all state-funded schools in England was analysed by SSAT – the national schools’ membership organisation for improvement.

Julie Bloor, Principal of Shirebrook Academy, said it was a great honour to be recognised in the awards.

“We take our pupils education very seriously and we make sure that all of our teachers are rated good or outstanding by OFSTED, never less than that,” she said.

“We want to give all out students the best possible chance and we feel that high quality teachers are the best to deliver this.

“We plan the work that needs to be done with each individual pupil based on their needs and interventions are put in place early on in their Academy career.

“This can include small group work with a teacher, with a group of pupils in a similar position.”

Mrs Bloor said that their award was testament to the whole school and recognised the hard work of all the staff and pupils.

She said: “I am very proud of all members of staff who work tirelessly to get the pupils reaching their targets and working to the best of their ability.

“Staff and students work very closely together to achieve the results they are striving for.

“It’s just fantastic to see the results at the end of the hard work. It’s great to be recognised but it’s what comes naturally to us all here at Shirebrook; we want the best for our pupils.”

The award will be presented to the school at a ceremony in July.
