Figures published by an insurance company and a road safety charity show the Sherwood constituency rated eighth nationally for having people killed or seriously injured in crashes.

The Dashboard report by Direct Line Car Insurance and charity the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS), has broken down the figures to show the 10 parliamentary constituencies with the highest rates of casualties involving serious injuries or deaths, in relation to population.

It shows Sherwood is 58 per cent above the national average – with 30 people killed between 2008 and 2013.

It is also 19 per cent above average for the number of casualties, including minor injuries.

A PACTS spokesman said: “Constituencies with the highest indices tend to be very rural in nature, probably reflecting the high speed impacts as vehicles travel at faster speeds on roads with fewer safety engineering measures to reduce inherent risks in the road network.”

Dashboard statistics between 2008 and 2013 give information on casualties for residents of the constituency, rather than looking only at collision locations and progress over the last six years.

The report shows the Mansfield constituency is 30 per cent higher than the national average for casualties including minor injuries and 29th out of 632 constituencies overall.

Progress was rated at 11 per cent faster than the national rate.

The Ashfield constituency has 25 per cent more overall casualties than the national average, making it the 51st highest in the country.

Progress was rated at 5 per cent slower than the national rate.
